IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: Sonic the Hedgehog
Character journal: spinsandneedles
Series name: Sonic the Hedgehog IDW comics
Canon notes: Sonic's arriving post issue 56, after nearly being zapped to death by Surge, and after the Scrapnik Island mini series
Species: Hedgehog, but like, a big blue one with shoes
Age: 15 or 16??? Sega can't seem to settle on one. The games are IDW canon and he had a birthday in Generations sooo i'm gonna say 16
Arrival Condition:
He's recently injured his left leg twice, in two separate aircraft crashes. He was also nearly electrocuted to death (thanks Surge!), so he may have a bit of healing left to do after after all these wacky events. Seems perfectly fine though, as he doesn't know the meaning of 'slow down and fucking recover you moron'.
History: https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(IDW)/History_and_appearances
Personality:
Sonic the Hedgehog is the very definition of Chaotic Good. His thrill seeking nature and his unwavering sense of justice come together to form a ferocious little blue spike ball that is equal parts compassionate and destructive. If the power of friendship doesn't work on an enemy, then the power of bouncing into them really hard until they break usually gets the job done.
Ever the optimist, no matter how bad a situation seems, Sonic is the kind of person who will face it with a smile and probably crack a smartass comment or two. That's not to say he doesn't get serious when a situation turns dire, but he still manages to find some form of entertainment or even some weird sense of enjoyment from most of his many life or death encounters with whatever force of evil he's facing this week. Much to the annoyance of his enemies, of course. Upon discovering that Sonic actually had fun solving all of his deadly traps, Eggman once commented that, had he known Sonic was enjoying them so much, he would have built less of them.
While not necessarily a loner, Sonic tends to prefer to do things his own way. Thus, he tends to avoid associating too much with larger organized groups like the Resistance (later known as the Restoration), even though most of his friends are involved with it in one way or another. He is capable of working with others, syncing up pretty well with people he vibes with (the more chaotic the fight partner, it seems, the better he works together with them), but has been known to butt heads just a bit with those who prefer to take a more slow and cautious approach to certain problems, which sort of goes double for anyone in a position of authority. He doesn't really have a problem with authority figures, but he values his freedom to come and go as he pleases too much to let himself be tied down by anyone else's rules.
Perhaps a trait that some would consider naïve, Sonic is the kind of person that likes to think that everyone has the potential to do good, and that everyone deserves a second chance to live their lives in a less evil sort of way. Because of this, he's managed to turn old enemies into allies and even friends (as with Knuckles, Shadow, and Mecha Sonic as of the Scrapnik Island mini series). Unfortunately, the power of friendship doesn't always come in clutch for him. "Mr. Tinker" went right back to being Eggman as soon as he regained his memories, Metal Sonic found his way back to Eggman as soon as he was able despite Sonic's willingness to bury the hatchet, and Surge still wants to murder him despite Sonic giving her a chance to call the whole thing off and be chill.
In the case of Eggman specifically, Sonic was called out by both Shadow and Espio during the Metal Virus arc for letting Eggman go after he'd lost his memory, rather than finishing him off once and for all so that there was no risk of him coming back later and... doing exactly what he came back later and fuckin' did. Sonic's insistence that even someone as horrible as Eggman deserved a second chance, and everyone else reluctantly going along with it, had indirectly led to the outbreak that nearly took out all of the organic life on the planet. Big oof, right. Regardless, Sonic still insists on remaining steadfast in his morals and beliefs, but after being burned so many times by some of the people that he's let himself put a little faith in, he's maybe a little more wary about it.
He's self confident to a fault at times, often coming across as cocky, especially if he's in the middle of a big ridiculous battle. His sense of self preservation is basically nonexistent next to his overactive sense of duty, and he tends to carry the weight of the world on his tiny blue shoulders. He has a habit of flinging himself headfirst into the most dangerous situations he can find in order to help as many people as he can, but sometimes, it's just because he's bored and looking for the next adrenaline rush. Though unusually durable given his size, he has managed to get himself injured on a number of occasions and ends up jumping right back into a fight without so much as complaining when he hasn't had time to heal. His general impatience doesn't do him any favors in this regard as he can't stand just sitting around in one place, even if doing so would be good for him so that he can recover.
Abilities:
As the name implies, Sonic goes fast. While his exact top speed is unknown, he is able to surpass Mach 1. Utilizing this bonkers speed, he's been shown to be able to run vertically up the sides of buildings and run over water. Which is good, because he can't swim.
To compliment his speed, he also has incredibly good reflexes and stamina. His reflexes allow him to adapt on the fly to most situations while maintaining his momentum and effortlessly change course without having to slow down. Thanks to his deep well of stamina he can run for hours at a time, but even he can wear himself out if he's on the move nonstop for too long.
His strength and endurance can probably be best described as superhuman, especially considering his size. He regularly curls up in a little ball and bounces his entire pointy body off of big metal robots to destroy them, gets smashed or thrown through walls or nearly electrocuted to death, and he casually gets up and walks away from all of it like this is just how he spends his Tuesdays (it is).
By using the the seven Chaos Emeralds, he can transform into Super Sonic, which cranks all of his base abilities up to eleven and gives him the ability to fly. This is very unlikely to happen in game as there are no Chaos Emeralds, SO.
Also he also knows how to fly a biplane. Not as good as Tails, but it's a thing he can do.
